This morning greeted us with large snowflakes falling as we walked to breakfast. After breakfast it continued to snow for another hour while we began work on the cabins. Not to worry, we kept warm by moving mattresses out of the cabins into a barn and then helping to disassemble the wood bunk bed frames. The snow stopped but with a chill still in the air, Iulian built a bonfire with the old bunk beds. Near the bonfire was an old tree Iulian thought was too rotten and perhaps dangerous in case it fell over while we worked. He tied a piece of wood to three ropes and tossed it into the branches of the tree. He then directed the team to grab a section of the rope at the end, cut a small portion of the tree trunk with a chain saw, then yelled 'pull', and down came the rotten tree. It was a highlight of our work this morning. I think the highlight for Iulian and his crew was the fact that three hours of work from our team saved them over two days of work. It was a blessing to them and your kids worked diligently and joyfully.
After a lovely lunch, it was finally time to visit our first placement center in Orlat. Before we could even get out of the van smiles and hugs greeted us with such excitement. Our craft and Easter distribution was a huge hit and it was incredible to watch our kids interact with the children at Orlat. Smiles never left a single face the entire time. At dinner we debriefed the day and some of the impressions from your kids included these thoughts: "I felt a mixture of happiness and sadness because their smiles and excitement was so fun yet leaving them was sad knowing they didn't have family to care for them." "I was amazed at the connection I could have with someone without words." "The kids at the center have a bond and care for each other in a way that is so beautiful."
Your kids are truly engaging in the process and absorbing everything with eyes wide open. I speak on behalf of all the adults involved here, we are impressed with your kids. Well done parents!
Tomorrow we begin painting the cabins and then will visit two centers with older kids. Thank you for entrusting us with your children so they can have this life-changing experience.
